How to Make Butter Slime at Home

Butter slime is the one everybody wants to touch. It’s soft, spreadable, and glides like frosting, that dreamy clay-like texture that’s just as fun to shape as it is to stretch. The secret ingredient? Clay. Here’s how to make it at home.

What you’ll need

  • White school glue (PVA glue)

  • Slime activator (or a saline + baking soda mix)

  • Soft modeling clay, this is what makes butter slime butter

  • Optional: lotion, a few drops of coloring, and a scent

How to make butter slime, step by step

  1. Start with a base slime. Pour your glue into a bowl, add color if you want, then add activator a little at a time, mixing until it pulls away from the bowl and stops sticking to your hands. (Sticky? See our how to fix slime guide, a few drops of activator fixes it.)

  2. Knead in the clay. Take soft modeling clay roughly a third to a half the size of your slime and work it in bit by bit. This is where the magic happens, the clay turns stretchy slime into smooth, spreadable butter.

  3. Adjust the feel. Too stiff? Add a little lotion and keep kneading. Too sticky? A few more drops of activator.

  4. Play! Good butter slime spreads across a table like icing and holds a shape.

Why does glue + activator turn into slime?

Quick science, because it’s genuinely cool: glue contains long, tangled polymer chains, and the activator “cross-links” them together into a stretchy network, which is why runny glue becomes squishy slime. The National Inventors Hall of Fame has a great kid-friendly breakdown if you want to turn slime time into a mini science lesson.
